Agencies can sign up for Scholastic books

by Nancy Hindin, MATC

Agencies who are members in the Greater Milwaukee Literacy Committee can sign up to receive free books this spring or early summer.

For each of the last four years, Scholastic Books has donated 100,000 books to Literacy USA. GMLC agencies have received 3,500 books each year. This Year, Scholastic will donate 150,000, and GMLC has asked for 5,000 books. Delivery will be in May or June.

Scholastic sends children’s books from pre-school to junior-high levels. Most of the books, though, are at the elementary level. Some of them are in Spanish. There are multiple copies of each book.

Agencies must sign up for books in advance, using one of these methods:
• at the GMLC Math Workshop on February 25;
• at the March or April GMLC meetings;
• by email to me: nhindin@sbcglobal.net.

Requests must include the agency name, and a contact person’s name and e-mail address. The books will be delivered to the main floor of the Central Library, 814 W. Wisconsin Ave., and will be distributed over two days.

Each agency that receives books will be required to write a letter on agency letterhead, thanking Scholastic Books and explaining how the books will be used.

Volunteers are needed to help with distribution on pick-up days. Please e-mail nhindin@sbcglobal.net to say whether you can help in the morning or afternoon.
