Thanks Where Thanks Is Due

Many generous individuals and organizations have helped GMLC in recent months. Their generosity contributes to our goals of improving literacy and making the general public aware of literacy issues. We thank them warmly and copiously.

Milwaukee Achiever
Director Peg Palmer has allowed her staff to use part of their time to work on GMLC projects:
* creation of the new GMLC brochure;
* formation of the PowerPoint presentation for the Speakers’ Bureau;
* design of the new display board;
* development of a logical system to respond to hotline calls, including a booklet listing our affiliate agencies that is sent to those who call.
Literacy Services of Wisconsin
For years, this organization has graciously allowed GMLC to hold their monthly general meetings and several annual meetings in their facility – free of charge. This adds up to big savings.
Milwaukee Public Library
Our monthly board meetings usually are held in the small conference room at Washington Park Library. In addition, GMLC materials are regularly distributed throughout the library system.
Kohl Charities
GMLC received $300 this year, and has received several thousand dollars over the years, from this charity that aims to improve education.
Barnes & Noble
GMLC was invited to set up informational tables for International Literacy Awareness Day at stores in Brookfield Square, Mayfair and Southridge Malls in September. GMLC also received a percentage of sales on those days. Barnes & Noble then asked GMLC to set up tables during their Teacher Appreciation Day September 30 and to share what GMLC is all about with local teachers, parents, grandparents and other patrons.
Boston Store
GMLC has participated in Boston Store’s Community Days for the last several years, earning several hundred dollars every time we have sold coupon booklets, and getting our message out to people who may never have heard of us.
Scholastic Books
GMLC has been able to distribute tens of thousands of children’s books – in English and Spanish – to various literacy providers who are members of GMLC.
United Migrant Opportunity Services (UMOS)
Tony Tsai organizes a group of students to compile and mail the GMLC newsletter, The Exchange. This saves hundreds of dollars a year and countless hours of labor.
Bill Wiener
Husband of GMLC member, Nancy Hindin, Bill works at Pressing On, and prints the newsletter at a reduced cost four times a year.
Mary Ann Jackson
When she spoke at GMLC’s annual meeting in September, Mary Ann not only turned back her speaker’s fee, but also followed up with another generous donation.

Additional on-line resources

ProLiteracy offers advocacy aids
Information about legislative developments and new advocacy resources have been added to the ProLiteracy Web site. To access the new section, go to www.proliteracy.org and click on the Capitol Hill icon, or follow this link.
Training for adult education
The Center for Literacy Studies at the University of Tennessee and the Ohio Literacy Resource Center at Kent State University offer a variety of courses at all levels for adult-education practitioners. Each course has been piloted and is facilitated by experienced trainers. All participants must have their own e-mail addresses and will complete a “Tech-Check” one week before a course start date to ensure their computer equipment and Internet connection are sufficient for effective course participation.
